The annual women’s South Essex indoor cricket sixes, again sponsored by Thurrock Sports Council, has been completed with Belhus Ladies (pictured) emerging as champions for the first time. With strong competition from four teams entered by the large Orsett and Thurrock club with distinguishing names of Amazons, Unicorns, Valkyries and Vixens, Belhus secured their title with a five-wicket win over the Unicorns. But two previous matches had been more of a challenge. There was a ten-run winning margin against Vixens, while Valkyries came within seven runs of the Belhus score. The Amazons suffered a similar fate, going down by 18 runs to the North Stifford-based club.
History was made when Jess Martin of Valkyries became the first player to take a hat-trick in the competition. Martin finished with three wickets at a cost of just seven runs which enabled her team to accomplish a 64-run win over the Vixens. Event scorer was Julia Squires with an umpiring team of Martin Burnley, Jim Medlycott and Michael Squires.
